{"id":1045,"date":"2012-01-21T10:28:14","date_gmt":"2012-01-21T15:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.bottlerockettheology.com\/?p=1045"},"modified":"2012-01-21T10:28:14","modified_gmt":"2012-01-21T15:28:14","slug":"like-a-madman-has-god-got-caught-up-in-a-little-too-much-hyperbole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dave.dlscott.info\/?p=1045","title":{"rendered":"Like a madman &#8230; Has God got caught up in a little too much hyperbole?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00a0Follow up<\/strong> from last post as I continue to read through Proverbs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Another plug<\/strong> for a disciplined approach to reading through the Bible. \u00a0You will have many \u00a0&#8220;aha&#8221; moments where the very specific nature of the Bible grabs your attention. \u00a0We learn new things and we learn many things &#8220;all over again for the first time.&#8221; \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>So has God gotten himself caught up in a little too much hyperbole?<\/strong> \u00a0Has he taken the matter too far with exaggeration? \u00a0Has he gone over the top as parents sometimes do when they caution their children against a perceived threat of harm or evil?<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe he is telling the truth? \u00a0Maybe deceiving our neighbor is a more destructive act than we are willing to admit or believe. \u00a0Let&#8217;s see if we can reason through this for a moment as to whose perspective may be the most accurate.<\/p>\n<p>God is light, truth, infinite, eternal, all-wise, all-knowing &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We are &#8230; born blind in the darkness of sin living in a deceived world (Revelation 12:9).<\/p>\n<p>Okay, I think you get the point.We&#8217;ll give God the nod on this one.<\/p>\n<p>So maybe we should listen?<\/p>\n<p><strong>On deceiving our neighbor &#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A madman &#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Proverbs 26:18\u201319 (NIV84)<br \/>\nLike a madman shooting firebrands or deadly arrows <sup>19<\/sup> is a man who deceives his neighbor and says, \u201cI was only joking!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Does God say it or not? \u00a0In yesterday&#8217;s post God described deceiving our neighbor as\u00a0a club, or a sword or a sharp arrow.<\/p>\n<p>Today &#8230; A madman shooting firebrands or deadly arrows.<\/p>\n<p>(Firebrands &#8211; burning pieces of wood. \u00a0Picture flying fragments from a building fire or a wildfire in the forest.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>A malicious man &#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Proverbs 26:24\u201326 (NIV84)<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 10px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\nA malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but in his heart he harbors deceit. <sup>25<\/sup> Though his speech is charming, do not believe him, for seven abominations fill his heart. <sup>26<\/sup> His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A few observations of the malicious man &#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disguises himself with his lips<\/li>\n<li>Harbors deceit in his heart<\/li>\n<li>Speech is charming<\/li>\n<li>Seven abominations fill his heart<\/li>\n<li>Malice concealed<\/li>\n<li>Wickedness exposed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">I have known someone like this; went to church together; served in the church leadership together.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">He never accepted God&#8217;s version of deceiving his neighbor. \u00a0Very sad.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 24px;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Follow up from last post as I continue to read through Proverbs.
