Not sure where I picked this up.\u00a0 I mean, I know Mom and Dad taught this, but I don’t remember a specific instance.\u00a0 It was just always there.\u00a0 Treat others with respect and care before God.\u00a0 And I saw them live it out beautifully, very beautifully.<\/p>\n
I remember getting spanked for teasing a poorer girl in our town about cooties.\u00a0 Mom showed me her “disapproval” on that one.<\/p>\n
We were around African-Americans very little growing up, but we would not dare use a racial slur or display any disrespect.\u00a0 That is if you valued a pain-free backside.<\/p>\n
So with this as a background. . .my other friend’s comment surprised me.<\/p>\n
“You aren’t going, are you?”\u00a0 He was referring to my other new friend Phillip’s birthday party.<\/p>\n
I was just beginning the seventh grade.\u00a0 We had recently moved to the area, and I had several new friends.<\/p>\n
Phillip invited me to\u00a0 his birthday party, and, of course, I wanted to go.<\/p>\n
Then my other friend’s question:\u00a0 “You aren’t going, are you?”\u00a0 As in Phillip is poor and not popular and you don’t want to be associated with that, do you?<\/p>\n
Sure I did.\u00a0 Mom and Dad wouldn’t have it any other way.<\/p>\n
