…and taught him to read in that vast book opened over our heads which they call heaven, and where God writes in azure with letters of diamonds.

Excerpt Count of Monte Cristo

I love technology. Listen to Count via Audible. Follow with free iBook on my iPhone.

There they had a bit of a skirmish in getting rid of the duties; the excise was, in truth, the everlasting enemy of the patron of The Young Amelia. A customs officer was laid low, and two sailors wounded; Dantes was one of the latter, a ball having touched him in the left shoulder. Dantes was almost glad of this affray, and almost pleased at being wounded, for they were rude lessons which taught him with what eye he could view danger, and with what endurance he could bear suffering. He had contemplated danger with a smile, and when wounded had exclaimed with the great philosopher, “Pain, thou art not an evil.”

Still wowed at the amazing words of God!

Still wowed!

I love it that I am still wowed every time I read the word of God.

“Grace to you and peace … from Jesus Christ … the ruler of the kings of the earth.”

Revelation 1:4–8

John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne,
5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood—
6 and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
7 Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen.
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Job 28:20–28

Where does wisdom come from?

And … Do we believe our answer?

As professing believers in Jesus Christ our obvious answer is not always the one that rings most true in our lives, i.e. the answer we give in our group Bible study might not match our daily choices in responding to the people around us and the various circumstances of life.

Established behavior and thought patterns often trump our Lord’s instruction.

If we truly bow before our God in reverence, then we will find wisdom at it’s Source.

  • Job 28:20-28
    Where then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding?21 Thus it is hidden from the eyes of all living And concealed from the birds of the sky.

    22 Abaddon and Death say, ‘With our ears we have heard a report of it.’

    23 God understands its way, And He knows its place.

    24 For He looks to the ends of the earth And sees everything under the heavens.

    25 When He imparted weight to the wind And meted out the waters by measure,

    26 When He set a limit for the rain And a course for the thunderbolt,

    27 Then He saw it and declared it; He established it and also searched it out.

    28 And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; And to depart from evil is understanding.”

Hosea 11:10–11

Our God, once roaring like a lion in judgment, now roars like a lion to call his people from the nations. I’m impressed.

“They will walk after the Lord,
He will roar like a lion;
Indeed He will roar
And His sons will come trembling from the west.
11They will come trembling like birds from Egypt
And like doves from the land of Assyria;
And I will settle them in their houses, declares the Lord. “

Job 23:8–12

Perplexity and faith often mingle on the path of life, the path of God. Job learned that true faith does not grow in a nice, neat package but right in the middle of the mess and the pain.

And sometimes we can’t really sort things out so we just keep moving ahead and trusting the One we know loves us with an everlasting love and is Sovereign Lord. We go forward even when we don’t “see” God because we know he is there and he is good no matter what the mess and the pain tell us. And trusting in times like this bring “God is so good” way past the cliche to the deep places of our hearts. Kerry and I know pain, more than we would like, and we will both tell you that those words – “God is so good” – shine very brightly against the dark background that life can too often be.

“Behold, I go forward but He is not there,
And backward, but I cannot perceive Him;
9When He acts on the left, I cannot behold Him;
He turns on the right, I cannot see Him.
10“But He knows the way I take;
When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
11“My foot has held fast to His path;
I have kept His way and not turned aside.
12“I have not departed from the command of His lips;
I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food. “

Priests of the High Priest of Heaven from 1 Peter 2:1-10 …

Dave song / September 2012 …

  • My composition from 1 Peter 2:1-10 for a message titled “The Priesthood of the Believer” at World Gospel Church, Terre Haute, Indiana on September 23, 2012 (early service).

Dave on grand piano and vocal …

  • 1 Peter 2:9–10 (NIV84)
    9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
