desert caravan camels believers believe

Abram, later named Abraham by God …

… was a man of faith.

… was a friend of God.

… believed the LORD.

One day, about four hundred years or so after God had destroyed the entire world with a great flood, the same God of glory approached Abram, a Bedouin herdsman living in Mesopotamia, and a descendant of Shem, one of the three sons of Noah who rode out the storm on the ark, with an unbelievable promise that he, the LORD, would bring this man to a place of prominence and greatness in the world, and not just before his contemporaries, but that through this promise or covenant, his life, Abram’s life, the Bedouin herdsman, would have a blessing effect on all the families of the earth throughout the history of the earth.

So who was this man the LORD spoke to that day? He was a man who believed God. If there is one word, or phrase, by which we could identify Abram from the very beginning, it would be this. Abraham believed God.

The Apostle Paul writes to the Romans: For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God … ”

And later in Romans …  “In hope [Abraham] believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told …”

And to the Galatians Paul wrote: Just as Abraham “believed God …”

Abraham, a man of faith and a friend of God. He believed God. Truly, actually believed God, as in his belief led to obedience.

men whiteboard chose their plan

Life can be very complicated, but often our complication is a result of and an excuse for our sin. Look at how “complicated” things became in Genesis 3. God says, “Don’t eat from that tree.” Not complicated. At least not until we discuss what God really meant.

The background research for a Genesis study can be overwhelming. For instance, this week we have the “Table of the Nations”, how they were actually dispersed, the division of the earth at the time of Peleg … Questions such as, “Was there really one language at the time, or did it mean that they had a lingua franca, a universal trade language?”

Genesis is in one way chock full of very complicated issues.

BUT ON THE OTHER HAND … many of them break down as simply as the first “complication” that Adam and Eve encountered when they were deceived by the serpent.

Today’s message concerning the dispersion of the nations at the time of Babel is an excellent example. We can research Ancient Near East culture until our eyeballs roll across the floor, but the issue is that the people gathered and came up with their own plan and ditched God’s plan.

As humans, we have a history of this. See STUDY SHEET TWO for reference.

God had saved humanity again and blessed them again and commanded them again to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. And they said “Thanks, but no thanks” we are going to settle down right here. If we pull together, we can do great things.

Complicated? No. Rebellious, stiff-necked and stupid? Yes.

As did Adam and Eve, they doubted God’s plan for their lives and chose another direction.

An Outline of Genesis 9 …

  • God blessed Noah and his sons and gave them boundaries and guidelines for the new world they would face, 9:1-7.
God commanded them to be fruitful and multiply.
God put a fear and dread of humans on all the animals of the earth.
God gave them permission to eat anything that moves and the green plants, except with the blood.
God pronounced a reckoning on any animal or human who took the life of a human.
God repeated his common to be fruitful and multiply and increase greatly on the earth.
  • God established a covenant with Noah to never again destroy the world by a flood, 9:8-17.
God will never again destroy people and animals of earth by a flood.
God gave the sign of the rainbow to remind us of this covenant.
  • Noah and his family left the ark and stepped into a new world, 9:18-29.

scoffers naturalists globe triangles lab

Scoffers scoff, and mockers mock. It’s what they do.

  • (2 Chronicles 36:16 NLT) But the people mocked these messengers of God and despised their words. They scoffed at the prophets until the LORD’s anger could no longer be restrained and nothing could be done.
  • (Proverbs 1:22 ESV) How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?
  • (2 Peter 3:3 ESV) Knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires.
  • (Acts 17:32 ESV) Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. But others said, “We will hear you again about this.”
  • (Galatians 6:7 ESV) Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

Believers believe. That’s what we do …

  • Our faith is not blind faith. We have good reason to believe our God. We intimately know the Person we trust. We live in him and in his words. We know that he is true and what he says is true because it is plain and clearly perceived in the world around us.
  • We have evidence to support our belief system because we have a written, accurate account from the only eye witness. What we observe fits this written account because the written account is true.
  • We have no need to suppress the truth because truth is the foundation of our belief system. Those who oppose our written account—God’s word, the Bible—have a tremendous obstacle in their quest. They must suppress the truth of God that his entire creation, including humans, gives witness to.
