Gotta know what it is first.

——

A good principle in our pursuit of God:  Let God define the terms.  Look for his clearest, plainest statements on whatever subject you are studying, the more specific the wording, the better.

And this one is easy.

Want to know what love is?  That is how our text begins.

Love is. . .

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV)
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud.  It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

What is love?  Before we can embrace this lifestyle, we must know what we are reaching for.

Think you already know?  Think again.

Okay, maybe you know some, but if you think you know too much then you don’t know what you need to know.  Just a caution – knowledge builds our pride, love builds our relationships, with God and people.

1 Corinthians 8.1-3 (NCV)
Now I will write about meat that is sacrificed to idols.
We know that “we all have knowledge.”
Knowledge puffs you up with pride, but love builds up.
If you think you know something, you do not yet know anything as you should.
But if any person loves God, that person is known by God.
Just though I’d say.
