Job is right … God is unfair.

In one day God allowed Satan to kill all Job’s children and destroy his business.

Job 27:2 (NIV)
“As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made me taste bitterness of soul,

God … who has denied me justice.

God is unfair, and Job knew it.

And I agree with Job … somewhat.

Job was God’s top choice as to what it meant to be righteous and godly, and God let all kinds of terrible things happen to Job.

(NIV) Job 1:8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

Why would God allow Satan to do such awful things to a person he thought so much of?

Because Job needed to go somewhere.

He needed to leave his land of blessing for God’s land of blessing.

“Listen” to Job’s before and after.

(NIV) Job 42:3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.

(NIV) Job 42:5 My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.

Job now saw the difference between the cushy life of enjoying God’s blessing and the reality of enjoying God.

God’s playing field is bigger than ours. He will allow unfair things, even direct the drama, so our story will grow past the immediate, the temporary to a story lived in eternity before the presence of God.

God’s playing field is forever, and we need to realize that to continue to trust his goodness and his direction for our lives.

The Good Shepherd leads us from our first moment of trust to a world beyond our comprehension.

Listen to Job again speak of things too wonderful for him to know.

(NIV) Job 42:3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.

God has a journey planned for each of his children to the land of “too wonderful.”

And sometimes he seems very unfair in the process.

Oops! We almost forgot Clarence.

Oops! We almost forgot Clarence.

Yesterday morning we were discussing the angels we knew by name. Michael, Gabriel and the fallen angel Lucifer.

And then I remembered Clarence. How could we have overlooked Clarence, especially around Christmas time?

Pretty cool, huh! Took pic this morning as the sun just began to reflect the “steam” from the frigid cold.

The distance between lips and hearts …

Revelation 2:5 (NIV)
Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

Remember the height from which you have fallen …

They had worked hard and endured; they could sniff out a false teacher like a bloodhound.

But the distance between knowing about God and even working hard for God compared to loving God is so great that God was going to judge them if they couldn’t make their way back to a loving relationship with their Savior.

He drew a very clear distinction between their idea of service and his idea of devotion. You can serve and not be devoted. You cannot be devoted and not serve.

God called it sin; he called them out on their idea of “doing church.”

When the weather outside is frightful …

When the weather outside is frightful, inside it’s so delightful.

But not always.

A good/bad thing about the harshness of winter is facing the fragility of life.

Can a few degrees downward shift on the thermometer really affect us that much?

Duh! Y-e-s! Yes!

We (read I) can experience feelings of insecurity. The cold can shake us; expose what vulnerable, little creatures we really are.

Unless …
Or until …

The creature remembers the Creator.

Now the arrow of my compass is again pointing to Jesus Son of God. My eyes are focused on the King and Lord of the universe, of whose realm I am a subject.

My weakness reveals my strength. By faith my attention turns from my human frailty to the forever, enduring nature of one born of God.

That would be me, weak little creature that I am but made “God-strong” by Jesus.

He paid the price on a cross that I might have hope no matter what “winter” I might face, literal winter or “winter” of the heart or soul.

The glory of the Lord …

The glory of the Lord …

This really does need to be our grand vision for life. Now and forever.

So we need to know what it means – “to the glory of God!”

I believe that this is our release, our ultimate freedom, when we bow our lives, our actual lives, beneath this grandest scheme for life.

No mere definitions or word play will quench our thirst for bringing pleasure and highest honor to God.

This is the “more” that we all pursue.

“More” is God.

Not money, not career, not relationships …

Not even our religion!

Highest honor to God in everything! This is glory to God. I trust him, his words, his direction in my life and this world.

I believe his words and live them no matter where they lead me. No matter what loss. Including my life, both literally and figuratively.

My love relationship with the Sovereign Lord of the universe expresses itself in devoted obedience and trust.

Glory to God, past the cliche, past my lips to my heart.

Volvo L220F … Good way to break the monotony

This morning I am test driving a new (118 hours) Volvo L220F loader.

Pretty cool. Climate control – Heat & AC. Auto trans. AM/FM radio w/ CD. Too many options and hi-tech gizmos to name.

Very functional. Good power and balance. Nice cab.

Joy stick controller. Rear video display. (I can see what is behind me.)

Better theology …

So what do you think?

Will our theology be better if we are obeying God?

less defending
more listening
more learning
more humility

I mean, really, do we think that God’s message and our ability to comprehend what he is telling us is so disconnected to our lives that we can trample the basic principles of love and kindness and still hope to grasp the “deep” truths of God?

Could we be so steeped in our intellectual bias that we are blind to the living quality of the living words?

Here is our big apologetic verse, our lynchpin so to speak:

(1 Peter 3:15 ESV) but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.

lynchpin – a central cohesive source of support and stability

TWO THINGS:

We might want to take some time to allow the words of this verse to sink into our hearts. We bow before Christ the Lord in our hearts as we acknowledge his holiness.

Our preparation is to answer a question that is being asked about the hope within us. Something is going on in our lives that draws the person’s attention past the conflict of this world.

And what might that be? We might want to take some time to allow God to set the context with the previous verses.

1 Peter 3:8-14 GW

Finally, everyone must live in harmony, be sympathetic, love each other, have compassion, and be humble.

(9) Don’t pay people back with evil for the evil they do to you, or ridicule those who ridicule you. Instead, bless them, because you were called to inherit a blessing.

(10) “People who want to live a full life and enjoy good days must keep their tongues from saying evil things, and their lips from speaking deceitful things.

(11) They must turn away from evil and do good. They must seek peace and pursue it.

(12) The Lord’s eyes are on those who do what he approves. His ears hear their prayer. The Lord confronts those who do evil.”

(13) Who will harm you if you are devoted to doing what is good?

(14) But even if you suffer for doing what God approves, you are blessed. Don’t be afraid of those who want to harm you. Don’t get upset.

This is another of those passages that I had one of those “aha” moments. Look at the lifestyle which is described in the verses preceding the “big one” on apologetics.

Another “this is not rocket science” passage.

Can we learn that we display hope in verses 8-14, and we are exhorted to explain the reason for the hope in verse 15?

So what do you think? Will our theology, our apologetics, be better if we are honoring God with lives of obedience?

How about replacing winning the argument with compassion and humility? Maybe ditch the ridicule and pay back for blessing.

Now wait a minute, who came up with that? Oh, that’s right, God did!

Is there possibly an outside chance that if we listen to God and do things his way that he might touch us with his goodness in the very deepest parts of our lives?

And enough so that whatever is happening deep inside of us because God is moving and shaking in the foundations and tunnels of our innermost being that a flickering, a glimpse of his glory, a little hope escapes the clay pot, a little flash of hope gleams in the eye of our friend?

And then, she might have a question for us concerning those flashes of God-light and that is where Peter tells us to be ready with an answer.

I think I’m on to something here. 🙂

(2 Corinthians 4:6 MSG) It started when God said, “Light up the darkness!” and our lives filled up with light as we saw and understood God in the face of Christ, all bright and beautiful.

Speaking for God … Not many of you

Speaking for God …

(NIV) James 3:1 Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

Here is what I am saying. If you cannot approach the words of God with the humility that allows his voice to be heard above yours, then be quiet and repent.

So maybe we should think not so much speaking for God but having the humility and courage to allow God to speak through us.

A tale of two messages …

One (from some days ago): humor, stories and the main point was drawn from another text. The person was heard.

Two (heard this morning): honest approach in humility to communicate the words of God. God was heard.

We have the tremendous opportunity to communicate the truth of God, but too often we speak for God without having first listened to him.

What do we say to a waiting world?
What God says … per his holy book the Bible.

Think about it. In Genesis three, Eve allowed her voice and the voice of the snake to be heard above the voice of God.

Why? She couldn’t accept God’s direction for her life. So she tweaked God’s words until she “heard” what she wanted to hear.
